Voice Teacher

”Alice Hughes is the reason I chose to pursue music in College. She did so much more than improve my technique as a singer, she fostered my love of music and inspired me to begin composing.“ ~Pierce, student

"Alice is an amazing voice teacher, and a joyful person.“ ~ Sara, parent

“Beyond Alice’s brilliant expertise and phenomenal ability to teach budding singers, she has a way of inspiring confidence, of helping her students believe in themselves. That alone is worth its weight in gold!” ~ Indi, parent of two students

”One of the many traits that makes Alice such a wonderful teacher is her adaptability. She carefully considers what each individual student needs in order to grow and succeed, and helps them find new ways of approaching challenges. I always left lessons feeling like I had both accomplished something and found a new goal to work towards!“ ~ Molly, student

Alice is currently enrolling new students for her Voice Studio in South Riding, Virginia. She has been an active voice teacher for 40 years and is a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing). She works with her students to find a relaxed, natural, and supported tone in a supportive and confidence-building environment. Although she specializes in musical theater, she works with students on a variety of styles and she emphasizes the need to be a versatile singer with excellent technique, across genres. Her students regularly place in various NATS competitions, in both classical and music theater categories, and at other types of festivals and honor events. Alice is also available for audition preparation, learning and selecting repertoire, sight singing and music theory lessons. In addition to private students Alice is available to do audition workshops and master classes, and as a choral clinician / adjudicator for vocal or choral events. She loves helping students discover the joy of sight singing and music theory.

Alice works with students from teenagers and college-aged students to adults of all levels. If you have a younger child, who is actively performing, she will consider enrolling younger students after a consultation with parents and trial lesson. Alice's goal is to enable all students: to build a solid foundation of vocal technique and other musical skills; to embrace their voice; to learn performance skills; to learn the art of the audition; and to become life-long singers.

Alice studied voice with Lynelle Frankforter Weins, Robert Bernard and now regularly works with Claudia Catania in New York City (Metropolitan Opera and Broadway credits.) Alice recently retired from 20 years as the Visual and Performing Arts Chair and Director of Choral Music at Pacific Collegiate School (grades 7–12) and  35+ years as co-director of the choirs at St. Lawrence Orthodox Church in Felton, California. Ms. Hughes received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of the Pacific in Music Education magna cum laude, with a choral emphasis, and holds a Master of Education degree from Bethany University.

Shaena, parent

”The music of life travels
in many ways. Some major, some minor, but life is
always full of melodies.
Alice is one of those melodies.“

Sherie, parent

”Alice is by far the best teacher, coach, mentor my child had in their 9 years of working together. Alice always had their best interest in mind. They learned so much about music, performing, their own voice and life. My child will continue working with Alice through adulthood.“

Cindy, drama colleague

”Alice is a gifted vocal instructor and musical director. She knew how to get the most out of each student's voice and give them the confidence to project their talent fully.“
